postoperative delirium

Disorientation, memory loss, difficulties in speech. If you are over sixty and undergoing surgery, you could be at risk of developing any or all of these symptoms. Postoperative delirium (POD) is an enormous problem, occurring in 23% of surgical patients over 60. POD leads to adverse outcomes such as a 25% increased risk of mortality within one month, double the risk of nursing home admission, costs of 1-2 B Euros to health insurers in Germany alone, and 38% of people who develop POD suffer long-term cognitive decline and dementia. There are no treatments available once symptoms arise. Instead, the focus is on prevention. Many highly effective prophylactic interventions (leading up to 43% reduction in POD) have been developed. These are cheaper than a patient with delirium, but are too costly to deploy for every patient.

Delirium is complex...

...and so is getting it under control. Clinics need more than a new delirium concept or a delirium unit. Screening elderly patients is important but does not reduce delirium. Only Prevention does. But it is a lot of work and can only be done for at risk patients. That is called Targeted Prevention, the only proven approach for permanently less cases. We support clinics to achieve that in no time and to stick to it – with the help of digital tools and AI.

More than 20% of patients aged over 60 suffer from postoperative delirium (POD) after surgery

Even though preventable, POD still occurs in more than 20% of surgical patients over 60. This statistic has been unchanged for 30 years! PIPRA, through its innovative, AI-driven approach, breaks this long-standing trend, and significantly improves patient outcomes and reduces healthcare costs.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES CAN REDUCE POD BY UP TO 43%

Delirium Management Program

PIPRA AG has developed a delirium management program which helps clinics to achieve Targeted Prevention in no time and to stick to it – with the use of digital technology, AI, and ready-to-use materials.

By incorporating PIPRA into their clinical workflows, healthcare professionals gain valuable insights to implement targeted preventive strategies, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and reducing the incidence of delirium.

This individualized approach optimizes healthcare resource allocation, ensuring that each patient receives the best possible care.

What you will get with the program:

  • Delirium risk assessment & prevention software:
Fully automated, secure, embedded into your clinical workflows and IT systems – CE-certified as a medical device (Class IIa)
  • Automated & customizable reports:
Up to date information on screening & prevention, compliance, delirium alerts, and impact on LoS, incidence, and more.
  • Premade delirium concept & support:
Comprehensive blueprint for a delirium concept, close on-site support by us, up to 30 elements for long-term habit change in the organisation
  • E-Learning:
Engaging, adaptable, video-based, easy-to-digest, for care staff, including detailed completion rate reports
  • Apps & palette of materials:
Access to delirium apps and a library of pocket guides & flyers for nurses, physicians, patients, and relatives

  • Minimum time investment: Our proven program helps you to avoid reinventing the wheel
  • Adaptable: The program is modular and adjusts to your existing delirium management habits and clinical workflows
Impactful
  • Better compliance: Achieve measurably higher compliance for prevention, screening, and management of delirium cases
  • Improved training & motivation: Constantly maintain knowledge of new and existing care staff in an easy and engaging way
  • Lower workload: Reduce work and stress for care staff (e.g. nurses) while significantly lowering delirium cases
Outcome-based
  • Lower case costs: Reduce average length of stay and therefore case costs
  • Risk-free: You only pay if the program is successful and has reduced delirium
  • Free up beds: Patients who get discharged sooner free up beds earlier

Easy Integration

PIPRA an algorithm that detects the risk of POD in presurgical patients. The tool can be incorporated into all modern EHR systems, including Epic, ChipSoft, SAP and eClinicalWorks.

As an alternative that requires no administrative effort, we have built an easy-to-use and quick browser-based and platform-independent user interface. We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback in customer validation tests.

Free Online delirium platform
We have created an online platform called Delirium Hub designed to educate and support healthcare professionals worldwide in the prevention and management of delirium.
Accessible Knowledge: Our goal is to make delirium education available to all, regardless of location or resources.

Time-Saving: We help to streamline daily delirium prevention and management tasks, alleviating the burden on healthcare professionals.

Empowerment: We aim to empower healthcare professionals to predict and manage delirium with confidence.
“The use of PIPRA can provide clinicians with actionable information “
“As clinicians consider and discuss surgical risks for their patients, we should similarly consider the risk for post-operative delirium. The use of PIPRA can personalize this risk calculation and provide both patients and clinicians with actionable information, with the purpose of instituting a delirium mitigation plan for that specific individual."
José R. Maldonado,
Stanford University School of Medicine
“AI-Powered PIPRA Accurately Predicts Postoperative Delirium Risk “
"There is a perception that elective surgeries have become extremely safe, thanks to advances in operative technique and anesthesia care. This view overlooks the fact that a substantial number of patients, in particular older ones, experience adverse cognitive outcomes after surgery. PIPRA has a game-changing solution which squarely addresses this need. It estimates delirium risk accurately and reliably, thanks to an AI algorithm trained on routinely collected clinical data. This is an extraordinarily valuable tool which will have a positive impact on choices made by patients undergoing surgery and their families, as well as surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other professionals who have a stake in the perioperative enterprise.”

“Enhancing Patient Care and Clinical Trials“
“PIPRA proposes a new tool that allows rapid determination of an individual patients risk to develop postoperative delirium after an operation. This is a very exciting and important development which can improve current clinical practice. We will finally be able to not only target resource intensive non-pharmacological preventive interventions to those patients who benefit the most but we will also be able to design clinical trials regarding delirium based on risk groups."
Prof. Dr. med. Luzius Steiner
Head of Anaesthesiology, Universitätsspital Basel
“PIPRA Significantly Improves Risk Assessment Over Standard Care “
"PIPRA is a huge advancement compared to the usual standard of care. The score that distinguishes between those at risk and those who are not is tremendously helpful."
Dr. med. Henry Perschak
Former Head of the International Medical Center, Klinik Hirslanden Zurich
“PIPRA Enhances Surgical Safety “
“In case of surgery, we all expect to recover fully and fast. The reality is often different. PIPRA is applying cutting edge technology to make surgery for all of us safer. PIPRA is a great idea with a great team to make it happen."
Dr. Jürg Wittwer
CEO Touring Club Schweiz
“PIPRA Reduces Nurse Workload “
“Patients who develop delirium while in hospital cause a disproportionately high additional workload for nurses. This quickly becomes a vicious cycle. The less time nurses have for a patient, the higher the likelihood that the patient will develop delirium. PIPRA identifies patients who are at risk and thereby enables nurses to initiate and control the relevantclinical care process in a timely and targeted manner. Early intervention through PIPRA can prevent delirium, and decrease workload and stress fornurses. This is an important contribution to healthcare providers, considering the current high volume of work and the problem of scarce personnel resources in the field of nursing."

Pflegeexperte/ Nursing Research Coordinator, Klinik Hirslanden
